Below is a list of the events and celebrations scheduled as part of National Eucalypt Day 2020.  Unfortunately due to the  Covid-19 pandemic many of these events did not run.  Events which ran have green headings, events deferred are in orange and events where a decision was pending have black headings.  We thank our partners for their support and wish everyone the best of health.

Open Days: Currency Creek Arboretum NEW DATES!!

Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September 9am to 4:30pm

Put on your walking shoes, grab a hat and head for the Open Days at Currency Creek Arboretum. The Arboretum boasts the world’s largest collection of eucalypt species with over 800 species and 8000 individual trees covering 30 hectares. At 10 am and 2 pm each day, Arboretum Curator and Eucalypt expert Dean Nicolle will lead free 1 hour and 2 hour extended tours.

Nestled on the banks of the Wannon River, in the heart of red gum country, Cavendish will host its second Red Gum Festival in April. Join the red gum ramble along the banks of the river, view the red gum sculptures, attend an environmental forum, enter the photo competition or enjoy the music. There’s something for everyone.

Eucalypt identification with Leon Costermans DEFERRED

Sunday 22 March 9.30am to 4.30 pm

Setting out by bus from the Royal Society of Victoria, the first stop will be the George Pentland Botanic Gardens at Frankston where Leon will teach the group how to understand and identify eucalypts using his iconic pocket book ‘Trees of Victoria and Adjoining Areas’. After a BYO lunch, the group will move on for a gentle bushwalk for field identification of eucalypts in the Langwarrin Flora and Fauna Reserve. Covering 214 hectares, this Reserve is recognised as an important area for conservation of indigenous flora and fauna.  Only a small number of tickets will be available from the 4th of March.  Check Remember the Wild’s page in Eventbrite under “Eucalypt Identification Tour with Leon Costermans”.

Eucalypt Dyeing Workshop: Australian National Botanic Gardens CANCELLED

Sunday 29 March

In this workshop you will learn how to make Eucalyptus leaf and bark dyes to make imprints on fabric. Each participant will dye a scarf to take home as well as samples of wool, silk and linen dyed in local ACT eucalypts. Morning tea and a short guided walk showing a variety of Eucalypt species in the Gardens is included.

Gum Fest! Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Mt Coot-tha

Saturday 21 March 2020 10 am to 2pm

Join us in celebrating our national botanic treasure – the eucalypt. Whether you want to learn about our magnificent gum species generally, or which ones to safely plant in your backyard, create something crafty using their leaves and nuts, taste test gum tree tea (and other bush brews), write a gum leaf poem, follow our gum tree trail or contribute to our eucalypt art installation, we have a range of activities for all the family to enjoy.
We’re putting on a shuttle bus at the Visitor Information Centre to take you up to the Australian Plant Communities car park, or you are welcome to walk up there yourself. The Bun Mobile food truck will be there to offer tasty snacks and cold drinks and you can finish the day by walking down to the Bandstand lawn to enjoy the Brisbane Symphonic Band ‘A Land Downunder’ performance at 2pm.

Pick up a pencil and notebook, and discover the trees of the gardens in a new way. The practice of drawing or writing in response to nature sharpens observation skills while also allowing a relaxing experience immersed in nature. This workshop led by ecologist, artist and writer Paula Peeters, will take you through beginner exercises that show you that anyone can write and draw.

Eucalypt trees have been an important feature of aboriginal life, providing food, medicine, shelter, weapons and ceremonial uses. Indigenous associations with eucalypts will be celebrated at a special ceremony at Worawa Aboriginal College to mark National Eucalypt Day. A booklet featuring several artefacts made from eucalypts will be launched. The artefacts will be on permanent display in ‘The Keeping Place’ in the art gallery in the grounds of the College.

Join curator of Tasmanian Flora Chris Lang, and Horticulturalist David Marrison, for a fascinating stroll through the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens and learn about the diversity and significance of Tasmania’s amazing Eucalyptus flora. You will be taken on a journey of discovery through various collections displaying our precious gum trees, including a number listed as rare and threatened.

Meet at the Information Hub at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens Main Entrance, Lower Domain Road.

QuestaGame is a mobile game that gets players outdoors to engage with, learn about and help protect life on earth. It is a mobile app game for photographing and identifying fauna, flora, and fungi. Sightings gain points for players and are verified by experts.

This years prizes for National Eucalypt Day are:
1. $50 Amazon Voucher for an Active Adventurer Prize
One player who has submitted at least one Eucalypt related sighting 22-24 March will be drawn at random.
2. $50 Amazon Voucher for the Best Observation of a Eucalypt (sighting and/ or story).  The story goes in the field notes when posting in the QuestaGame app.

If you are in the Bendigo region, be sure to visit the Eucy Museum to view a myriad of historic artefacts that make up the storyboard of the “Blue Eucy” industry. You can take a wander around the old distillery and see a working model demonstrating the full distillation process.

Walk: Lake Mountain Dahl Boardwalk

If you’re in the Lake Mountain area in Victoria, be sure to take a walk along the Bjarne K Dahl Boardwalk. The eucalypt regrowth since the 2009 wildfires is quite spectacular and gives some hope for regeneration following the recent fires. Situated at Snowy Hill, approximately 1 km before the Lake Mountain Resort, this is an easy 20 minute walk suitable for the mobility impaired.

At this workshop at the Mount Korong Eco Watch (MKEW) Nursery, members of MKEW will demonstrate techniques and share tips on how to grow Blakelyi Red Gum. Students from the Lodden Mallee Interchange will learn the principles of propagating native seeds, how to propagate by division and cuttings and the right growing media and containers to use.  No bookings available to the public at this stage.

Neotenous eucalypts will be featured in a tour of the notable eucalypts growing in the gardens of the University of Tasmania. These retain their juvenile leaf types into reproductive maturity, and are often seen in cut flower arrangements due to their attractive foliage. The walk will be guided by world-renowned eucalypt biologists and authors of the popular Tasmania eucalypt field guide EucaFlip, Emeritus Professor Brad Potts and Dr Rob Wiltshire. The 45-minute stroll around the Sandy Bay campus will depart at 12.30 pm from the upper end of the Churchill Avenue overpass, outside the Life Sciences building.

In the week of National Eucalypt Day, the foyer of the Life Sciences building at the University of Tasmania (Sandy Bay campus) will be filled with all-things-Eucalyptus, from scientific posters, historical documents, wood products and weird gum nuts to medicinal products and exotic beverages.

There will also be free local Tasmanian eucalypts available to take home.

If you take a walk along the 2 km Silvan Circuit you’ll see most of Tasmania’s eucalypts. You might even spot one of the most ‘out of place’ eucalypts in Australia. Look out for the E. cosmophylla, a mallee you wouldn’t expect to see thriving so far south.

Araluen Botanic park is nestled in a valley approximately 4.5 km from Roleystone within the Perth Hills, and is surrounded by spectacular Marri and Jarrah woodland.

Visit Araluen Botanic Park to enjoy a day relaxing and exploring the 14 hectares of landscaped gardens. Look out for impressive specimens of Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata), Marri (Corymbia calophylla) and Swan River Blackbutt (Eucalyptus patens) within and around the gardens, while enjoying a diverse mix of Australian native and exotic plant and tree specimens within the landscaped areas of the garden.

Have you seen the Ada Tree? It’s a giant Mountain Ash E. regnans), considered one of Victoria’s largest living trees and estimated to be over 300 years old. It towers over the surrounding rainforest in the headwaters of the Little Ada River. The tree can be reached from the Ada Tree car park via a track that meanders through the Island Creek rainforest. It’s an easy 3.2 km, 1.5 hour return trip.

Explore the ancient process of dyeing fabric using plants. Learn how to extract sustainable, skin friendly pigments from native plants, especially eucalypts, complimented with common botanical items found in your fridge and pantry. Australian Inland Botanic Gardens, Wentworth

Australian Inland Botanic Gardens, Wentworth

If you are near Wentworth, be sure to visit the magnificent 2,500 year old E. oleosa at the Australian Inland Botanic Gardens is an excellent example of adaptation to fire and harsh dry conditions. It has a lignotuber that survives and regenerates after fire. The lignotuber is 2,500 years old, the branches are closer to 700 years old. They develop new buds after fire or other events that cause branches to fall.

Richard Lester, former nurseryman and avid plant lover,  will welcome you to his nurturing open garden where he has raised over 50 unusual Eucalypts, many of which are small and suited to home gardens.

Please bring snacks and beverages and a gold coin donation will contribute to the Korumburra Horticultural Society’s plans to promote Eucalypts through 2021.

Queanbeyan Landcare will be hosting a walk up and back on the Mount Jerrabomberra Rd, starting at the locked gate just off Halloran Dve.
